Weigh It Up

Do It Yourself or Hire a Crew

Both routes are legitimate. Which one suits you comes down to your comfort with electrical work, your timeline and how much risk you want to carry.

Doing It Yourself

You buy the kit and handle design, mounting and connection.

What works well

  • Labour is the largest single line on most quotes — removing it cuts the total meaningfully
  • Complete control over panel choice, layout and the pace you work at
  • You finish with a genuine working knowledge of your own system
  • No waiting on anyone else's calendar

Trade-offs

  • Expect weeks, not days, once research and permits are counted
  • Specialist tools and roof-safety kit have to be bought or hired
  • No installation warranty — labour faults are yours to diagnose and fix
  • Some manufacturers limit their panel warranty when fitting is not certified

Where it can go wrong

  • Roof work and DC wiring are the two most common causes of serious injury in solar
  • A mis-flashed mount can cause leaks that only show up months later
  • Work that fails inspection may have to be stripped out and redone
  • Under-sized cable or poor earthing is a long-term fire risk

Questions

About This Service

The things people ask before booking a survey.

Can I supply my own panels?

Yes, though we will check they suit the roof and inverter before agreeing. Our workmanship warranty still applies to the installation; the panel warranty stays with whoever you bought them from.

What if the survey finds a problem?

You get told before any money changes hands. If the roof needs work first we will say so and quote it separately — and if solar is a poor fit for your property, we will tell you that too.

Do I need to be there on the day?

At the start and for the final commissioning, since we test against your consumer unit. The middle of the day is fine to leave the crew to it.

How is the price fixed?

The quote issued after your survey is the price you pay. The only variations are things you ask us to add, agreed in writing first.
